Biblical Purposes of the Church
1. Evangelism: To be a dynamic spiritual organism empowered by the Holy Spirit to share Christ with as many people as possible
in our church, community, and throughout the world (Acts 1:8 ESV).
But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea
and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.
2. Exalt: To be a worshiping fellowship, experiencing an awareness of the triune God (Father, Son and Holy Spirit), recognizing His
person, and responding in obedience to His leadership (Romans 12:1-2 ESV).
I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable
to God, which is your spiritual worship. Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that
by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.
3. Encourage: To experience an increasingly meaningful fellowship with fellow believers (John 13:34-35 ESV).
A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. By this
all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.
4. Equip: To help people experience a growing knowledge of God (Ephesians 4:11-16 ESV).
And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry,
for building up the body of Christ, until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature
manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ, so that we may no longer be children, tossed to and fro by the waves
and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by human cunning, by craftiness in deceitful schemes. Rather, speaking the truth in love,
we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ, from whom the whole body, joined and held together by every joint
with which it is equipped, when each part is working properly, makes the body grow so that it builds itself up in love.
5. Edify: To be a church which ministers unselfishly to persons in the community and the world in Jesus' name (Hebrews 10:19-25 ESV).
Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence to enter the holy places by the blood of Jesus, by the new and living way that he opened
for us through the curtain, that is, through his flesh, and since we have a great priest over the house of God, let us draw near with a
true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. Let
us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who promised is faithful. And let us consider how to stir up one another
to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see
the Day drawing near.
6. Emulate: To be a church whose purpose is to be Christ-like in our daily living by emphasizing total commitment of life, personality, and
possessions to the lordship of Christ (Romans 8:28-29 ESV).
And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose. For those whom he
foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be the firstborn among many brothers.
